Defensive Driving Tips for CLOVIS, New Mexico |
How do airbags work? Airbags work by preventing your upper body from striking the steering wheel, dashboard and windshield in a head-on collision. Airbags will NOT deploy in most side-collisions, but side airbags are not as common as front airbags. A sensor is activated when the car strikes a solid object. This sensor sends an electric current, initiating a chemical release of non-toxic nitrogen gas that causes the airbag to inflate. The deployment is instantaneous and the airbag will deflate immediately, preventing the risk of suffocation.
I know that all children under age 12 should ride in the back seat, especially if the car is equipped with airbags. What about the elderly; are they safe with airbags? The elderly, like all other passengers and drivers, should be properly restrained with the seat as far back as possible and the individual's back firmly supported. All occupants should also keep arms and feet away from where the airbags will deploy.
Did you know? If you close your eyes for just one second at 60 mph, you will travel 88 feet.
How old is too old to drive?
I am able to adjust the position of my steering wheel. Which position is most likely to minimize injury but provide the greatest protection from an airbag? Tilt the steering wheel toward your breastbone. Do not tilt it toward your abdomen or toward your head and neck. Try to adjust your seat at least 10 inches away from the center of the steering wheel.
How do I know if I am eligible for traffic school? Check the paperwork sent to you by the court. It will explain your options for traffic school.

Tip for CLOVIS, New Mexico Despite significant gains since the enactment of Federal motor vehicle and highway safety legislation in the mid 1960's, the annual toll of traffic crashes remains tragically high. In 2001, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's (NHTSA's) Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) and General Estimates System (GES) revealed that approximately 42,116 people were killed and another 3.03 million were injured on our Nation's roadways. Traffic crashes continue to account for 95 percent of all transportation fatalities and 99 percent of injuries, and represent the leading cause of death for individuals ages 4 through 33. The large number of crashes has placed a considerable burden on our Nation's health care system affecting the economy ' reaching $230.6 billion a year, or an average of $820 for every person living in the United States.
