Tip for CASSEL, California A solid yellow line on your side of the road marks a ?no-passing zone.?
Tip for CASSEL, California When travelling at speeds up to 70 mph, you need to be able to judge distances and speeds carefully. If, for example, you are travelling at 55 mph, to pass safely you require a 10 to 12 second gap in oncoming traffic. Your vehicle will cover 800 feet in those 10 to 12 seconds. A vehicle approaching you from the opposite direction also going 55 mph will also cover 800 in those 10 to 12 seconds. That's 1,600 feet, or one-third of a mile to pass safely.
Tip for CASSEL, California Driving at night increases the likelihood and severity of crashes. The risk of being in a fatal crash is highest for teens between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m.
Tip for CASSEL, California Like other road users who are urged to protect themselves from injury or death by wearing safety belts, driving unimpaired, and observing traffic rules, many motorcycle deaths could be prevented if motorcyclists would take responsibility for ensuring they have done everything possible to make the ride safe by taking operator training, wearing protective gear, and riding sober.
Tip for CASSEL, California Winter driving tip from Caltrans: The speed limit when chains are required is 25 or 30 miles an hour.
Tip for CASSEL, California Drowsiness is a common cause of highway hypnosis. Sleepiness, in fact, leads to many accidents in California. Between 2002 and 2006 falling asleep at the wheel was the primary collision factor in 4,046 injuries in California, according to the CHP. That's 2.77 injuries per day during that time period. (2006 Annual Report of Fatal and Injury Motor Vehicle Traffic Collisions, CHP)
Tip for CASSEL, California Don't exceed the speed limit. The chance of death or serious injury doubles for every 10 miles per hour over 50 mph that a vehicle travels. At high speeds, errors such as turning too quickly or braking too sharply can result in an out-of-control vehicle. Speed increases braking distance: If you double your speed, quadruple your braking distance. At high speeds, the amount of time available to detect and react to unexpected events is shortened.
Tip for CASSEL, California Between midnight and 3 a.m., 76 percent of speeding drivers involved in fatal crashes had been drinking. (Traffic Safety Facts 2006 Data: Speeding, NHTSA)
