Did you know? Eight young people die every day in the U.S. in alcohol-related crashes.
How do airbags work? Airbags work by preventing your upper body from striking the steering wheel, dashboard and windshield in a head-on collision. Airbags will NOT deploy in most side-collisions, but side airbags are not as common as front airbags. A sensor is activated when the car strikes a solid object. This sensor sends an electric current, initiating a chemical release of non-toxic nitrogen gas that causes the airbag to inflate. The deployment is instantaneous and the airbag will deflate immediately, preventing the risk of suffocation.
What software do I need to take the course? You need a working web browser that is connected to the Internet to take a defensive driving course. Tip for PAWNEE, Texas Don't cut in front of a large truck just because you see open space there. The driver is leaving enough room to brake safely. If you reduce this braking distance, you may be forcing the driver behind you to make a difficult choice: either brake hard (possibly causing problems such as jackknifing), or risk rear-ending your vehicle.
Tip for PAWNEE, Texas Winter driving tip from Caltrans: Put an extra car key in you pocket. A number of motorists have locked themselves out of their cars when putting on chains and at ski areas.
Tip for PAWNEE, Texas A recent analysis of age trends shows that over the past 10 years, fatalities in the 20 to 29 year old age group, the group with consistently the highest annual number of motorcycle fatalities, decreased, while fatalities in the 40 and over age groups increased. During this time, however, there were more driving age individuals in the 40 and over age group in the United States.
Tip for PAWNEE, Texas Various traffic control devices are used in construction and maintenance work areas to direct drivers or pedestrians safely through the work zone and to provide for the safety of the highway workers.
Tip for PAWNEE, Texas A research report by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety studied more than 10,000 reported incidents of road rage between 1990 and 1996. The report found that in approximately 44 percent of the violent traffic altercations, the perpetrator used a weapon such as a firearm, knife, club, or tire iron. In 23 percent the aggressive driver used the vehicle as a weapon, and in 12 percent used a vehicle and also a standard weapon. More unusual cases include pepper spray, eggs, golf clubs, and in one instance a crossbow. (Road Rage On the Rise, AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety.)
Tip for PAWNEE, Texas Texas driving tip: When you approach a stopped emergency vehicle with lights flashing, state law requires that you: (1) move a lane away from the emergency vehicle, or (2) slow down 20 miles per hour below the posted speed limit. Failure to comply could result in a fine of up to $200.
Tip for PAWNEE, Texas Talk to your teen about safety issues and the rules you are setting. Explain each one of your rules and the consequences for breaking it. Write up a contract with your teen driver to make sure they drive by the rules and drive as safely as possible. Include the most important issues.
Tip for PAWNEE, Texas Sometimes large vehicles must swing wide to turn safely. They'll swing right for a left turn and left for a right turn. Watch their turn signals and give them room to maneuver. Never drive between a turning truck or bus and the side of the road--your car could get stuck between the large vehicle and the curb.
